The basics of Gymglish

What is Gymglish?

Founded in 2004 by a team based in Paris, Gymglish creates language-learning content for users worldwide.

In this Gymglish review we will focus on how the platform can help you learn English, but courses are also available in French, German, Italian, and Spanish and are used by over 7 million people worldwide.

Gymglish lessons are available on a mobile app or via their website. Lessons focus on improving language skills in a fun, engaging, and personalized manner.

Gymglish stands out from other language apps with its native accents, cultural references, fun illustrations, and hilarious humor to keep learners engaged and entertained throughout their language journey.

It was also one of the first English language apps to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) to personalize the learning journey for each user – and this is evident as you progress through your lessons and realize that certain words or topics keep appearing until you are familiar with them.

If you’re fed up of language apps that feel like you’re working through irrelevant material at the wrong level for you, Gymglish could be the change you need to make learning English interesting again.

How does Gymglish work?

The first seven lessons (which can be part of a free trial) are used to assess your level. Don’t be too concerned if you find this part too easy or too difficult; the content you receive after this will be fully adjusted according to your ability.

Gymglish’s short lessons follow the story of Bruno Delavigne and his company the Delavigne Corporation. You’ll meet characters with different accents and plenty of humor, making language learning more enjoyable.

Having listened to an audio clip or read a short text, you’ll be asked a series of questions about what you heard or read (and an audio transcript is also available to read, if needed).

Then, there are some more general questions to answer. These typically focus on a particular grammar point or area of vocabulary.

Throughout the lesson, you can highlight any vocabulary you don’t recognize and add it to your personal vocabulary list. These words will appear in future lessons until you become comfortable using them, and you can access your word list at any time from your dashboard.

At the end of each Gymglish lesson is a ‘dessert’; a short video clip that introduces you to classic cultural references from movies or TV shows.

One lesson should take you 10-15 minutes to complete.

After this, you receive a lesson summary with any corrections marked and explained. One area where Gymglish excels is in providing detailed explanations for each point you were tested on – whether you got it correct or not.

Detailed feedback from Gymglish app about correct and incorrect answers

Each new lesson is customized using Gymglish’s AI technology. This means that every user receives a unique learning experience, according to their skill level, performance, and progress.

You’ll receive an email or app notification to remind you when your next lesson is available, with further reminders if you don’t access it straight away.

More recently, Gymglish has introduced an AI chat tool, Aimigo, that lets you speak or chat with Bruno at the end of each lesson. This is a good chance to practice your writing skills some more and mimic a natural conversation with a real person, without the worry of embarrassing yourself!

Who is Gymglish for?

The recommended starting level for Gymglish is A2-B1, which is Pre-Intermediate to Intermediate.

This means that Gymglish is not suitable for complete beginners; you should have more than a basic understanding of English before purchasing this course.

However, Gymglish does offer a separate course, called Rich Morning, which is designed for younger English learners from beginner level upward.

It’s also worth noting that you can select between two different teaching methods when you sign up.

The first is a full English immersion approach, where all course content and feedback is given in English. This is a good choice if you already speak a reasonable level of English and you wish to immerse yourself in the language to progress faster with your learning.

But you can also opt to receive teaching in your native language, if available (currently in French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Chinese). In other languages, you can receive tips in your native language with the main teaching (pedagogy) being in English.

This can make the content more approachable if you are not at an advanced level yet, but it also reduces your exposure to English as you learn.

You should keep in mind that Gymglish focuses on a long-term approach to learning, restricting access to the next lesson according to your plan. This is perfect if you want to learn in small amounts spread over several months or years, but not ideal for anybody who needs to learn English quickly.

How much does Gymglish cost?

Gymglish costs between €12 (about $13) and €79 (about $86) per month.

There are 3 levels of subscription: Basic, Premium, and Gold. Within these, you can pay monthly for your lessons or sign up for a longer plan. The longer you sign up for, the lower the monthly fee.

Higher-level plans let you access more lessons per week and save more vocabulary to your personal word list.

Do you receive a certificate of completion from Gymglish?

Yes, each Gymglish course on a Premium or Gold plan includes a certificate of completion. This is issued when you complete the duration you signed up for (6 months, 12 months, etc.)

The certificate is quite detailed, giving information about:

  • The number of English lessons completed
  • The time you spent training
  • Your participation rate
  • Your initial and current level, to demonstrate improvement

This is very helpful if you need to prove your level of English to a potential employer.

You can also check at any time to see your progress in each individual skill area.

Gymglish Cons

While Gymglish has many strengths, it does carry some drawbacks that you should consider before signing up:

  • Best for intermediate learners and above, not suitable for absolute beginners
  • Restricted lesson delivery, at most once a day, so you can’t speed through your Gymglish English course any faster than this
  • Limited conversation practice (we recommend you consider an English tutor if you need more help with speaking)
  • Expensive if you pay monthly, but longer-term plans are more affordable

If you’re not sure whether Gymglish is a good fit for you, you can take advantage of a 1-month free trial right now.

Gymglish alternatives

If you have read this Gymglish review and don’t think it’s right for you, here are a couple of Gymglish alternatives to consider.

Mondly

Mondly takes a similar approach to micro-learning as Gymglish. However, lessons are grouped by topic and you can work through them as you wish. Mondly also has more beginner-friendly content, and the monthly price is lower than Gymglish.

The main drawback of Mondly vs Gymglish is that you don’t benefit from personalized lessons; you just work through the same courses as every other user.

Busuu

Busuu is a language app paired with an international community of people who are passionate about learning languages.

With more real-life interactions available, you can build greater confidence when it comes to using English yourself.

You can access limited content on Busuu for free, but a premium subscription unlocks all content and more learning tools.

Gymglish review: Summary

In short, Gymglish courses are a fun and engaging way for intermediate and advanced learners to enhance their language comprehension skills via a tailored and adaptive method.

The platform offers detailed feedback and covers some elements of listening, writing, grammar, and vocabulary in each lesson.

The Gymglish team is continuing to invest in the latest AI learning technology to bring further innovation to the platform and its courses.

However, Gymglish may not be ideal for beginners or those who need more focus on speaking practice. In such cases, alternatives like Mondly or Busuu may be more suitable, depending on individual learning preferences and goals.

Whichever you choose, the key to success in language learning is persistence and dedication, so keep exploring and enjoying the journey!
